CoolMax fibres boast a four channel cross section, which greatly increases its surface area when compared to conventional fibres. This helps CoolMax fabrics to transport perspiration away from the body very rapidly, making it ideal for use in clothing designed to be worn in hot weather.
|DWR Durable Water Repellent|
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating added to fabrics at the factory to make them water-resistant (or hydrophobic). Durable water repellents are commonly used in conjunction with waterproof breathable fabrics such as Gore-Tex fabric to prevent the outer layer of fabric from becoming saturated with water. This saturation, called "wetting out", can reduce the garments breathability (moisture transport through the breathable membrane). As the DWR helps maintain the breathable nature of the outerwear, periodic DWR re-treatment is recommended during the garments life.

|Hydro-dry : Specific to Sprayway|
Exclusive to Sprayway, this is a performance fabric that offers a waterproof rating of at least 5000mm Hydrostatic Head. It also offers excellent levels of breathability.
The height of a water column that a treated fabric can support. Used to measure the waterproofness of jackets and tents. 1500mm is the accepted minimum.
Stands for Light Emitting Diode and is used instead of a conventional bulb. More energy efficient and much more durable than a standard bulb. Non replaceable.
LYCRA is a man-made elastane fiber that when blended with other fibers, has unique stretch and recovery properties. LYCRA fiber adds comfort, fit, shape retention, durability and freedom of movement.
Memory foam is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. Higher-density memory foam softens in reaction to body heat. A lower-density memory foam is pressure-sensitive and moulds quickly to the shape of a body pressing against it, but returns to its original shape afterwards. Memory foam is often used in walking boots for comfort and support, as the foam moulds to your foot shape.
A superfine, warm, non-itch wool that is capable of absorbing and releasing up to ten times more moisture than synthetic fibres. Excellent for expedition use as it resists body odours. Merino wool is so soft and smooth that it needs to be felt to be believed. Used by Icebreaker & Smartwool.

Neoprene or polychloroprene is a family of inert synthetic rubbers that maintain flexibility over a wide temperature range. A foamed neoprene is used as an insulation material for outdoor clothing, most notably in wetsuits.
Pertex disperses moisture very rapidly along its fibres by using a myriad of capillaries in order to speed up the rate of evaporation. Highly windproof, highly breathable and highly water repellent.
|Polartec 200 Thermal Pro|
A 100% polyester fleece offering high pile for warmth & breathability. Used as a midlayer
The number refers to the weight of the fabric In grams per square metre. Polartec 300 is double sided & breathable. Used as a midlayer
|Polartec Power Dry|
A high performance Malden fabric designed specifically for use in base layer clothing. Polartec Power Dry is also available with X-Static fibres, which have a layer of pure silver permanently bonded to the surface. Silver has odour-preventing properties which last for the lifetime of the garment. Used as a midlayer
A fleece fabric from Polartec that uses Lycra to create a fleece with four-way stretch for maximum freedom of movement. The durable nylon face resists wind and abrasion; a low-pile velour backing feels luxurious next-to-the-skin and wicks moisture quickly.

Polartecís renowned lightweight fleece that is four times more wind resistant than regular fleece. A durable water repellent finish provides enhanced protection against snow and dampness.
Polyurethane or PU is an extremely durable and flexible synthetic material often used in the soles of walking boots - it offers the elasticity of rubber combined with the toughness of metal.
PrimaLoft is a synthetic form of insulation used as an alternative to goose down. Primaloft insulation products offer high level performance for quality cold weather clothing, sleeping bags and footwear. PrimaLoft is more compressible than goose down, lightweight, breathable and unlike goose down has a high water repellency so the wearer remains dry, warm and comfortable even under the most extreme conditions.
PVC or Polyvinyl chloride is the third most widely produced plastic as it is waterproof and durable. It is commonly used in coats, skiing equipment, shoes, jackets and bags because of this.
Ripstop fabrics are woven using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing and ripping. During weaving (thick) reinforcement threads are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern. Ripstop fabrics therefore have a very good strength-to-weight ratio.
Teflon fabric protector provides durable, long-lasting protection against oil- and water-based stains, dust and dry soil. Fabrics with Teflon stay looking newer longer, and are easier to care for.
VELCRO is a well-known brand of fabric hook-and-loop fastener where tiny hooks on one piece of fabric can bind to tiny loops on another piece of fabric. The two fabrics are then temporarily fastened together but can be pulled or peeled apart.

The term wicking refers to the process whereby moisture is transferred away from the skin into non absorbent clothing where it has more surface area and will evaporate faster. This is also known as capillary action.
